In the fourth quarter of 2023, YouTube, owned by Google, took down more than 2.25 million videos in India due to violations of its community guidelines, as stated in a recent report. This figure represents the highest number of video removals among 30 nations, with Singapore and the US following closely behind with 1,243,871 and 788,354 videos removed, respectively. In contrast, Iraq had the lowest number of videos removed, totaling 41,176.
Globally, YouTube removed a staggering 9 million videos during the same period, with an astonishing 96 percent of these videos initially flagged by automated systems. Among these removals, 53.46 percent were taken down before garnering a single view, while 27.07 percent received between 1 and 10 views before being removed.
YouTube emphasizes its commitment to enforcing community guidelines consistently worldwide, irrespective of the uploader’s identity, content origin, or upload location. The platform employs a combination of machine learning algorithms and human reviewers to enforce policies and ensure content compliance.
Additionally, YouTube eliminated over 20 million channels in Q4 2023 for violating spam policies, encompassing activities such as scams, misleading metadata or thumbnails, as well as video and comment spam. The platform also targeted spam comments, removing more than 1.1 billion of them, with over 99 percent being automatically detected.
